Mobile Computing is a technology which helps you to connect your computer to a network wherever you go. This technology is actually driven from the demands of users who ask for mobility and portability in using their computers.
As the price of notebooks drop significantly and the availability of additional mobile computing devices increase (such as Palm devices and web-enabled wireless phones), the population of mobile users will grow significantly. To cope with their needs, mobile computing gives them an easy and convenient access to the network of their choice including the Internet.
People at all levels can gain the benefits of mobile computing. For example, busy executives can read emails and newsgroups, access libraries online, download product informtaion materials, etc. Sales staff can use their notebooks during presentations in order to broadcast product materials onto overhead projectors, VCRs, or throughout the client's network. Delivery drivers can keep on track and stay on time with handheld devices displaying maps with precise driving instructions narrowed down to 1/10th of a mile. Expenses during business trips can easily be recorded and then downloaded directly to your accounting department upon return from your travel (or even while still on-the-road).
There are two main characteristics in mobile computing technology:
Mobility - Wireless Communication True mobility is allowed here and it uses radio (or infra-red) signals for communication. As such, users can read and send email while driving or boating.
Portability - Wired Communication Though the computer still needs a wire/cable to link up to the network, it still provides the portability. This means that your computer can connect to a network, not simply be restricted to the network port in your office This allows your network connection to be extended/portable to anywhere with a network port.
